Gevorg Dabaghyan and Mad Zach “A New Dawn Is Upon Us”

Gevorg Dabaghyan is the world’s premiere duduk player. In addition to receiving the title of “Meritorious Artist of Armenia” by decree of the President of Armenia in 2004, he headed a project in 2006 that saw the duduk recognized by UNESCO as a masterpiece of intangible cultural heritage. Most recently he was granted the title of “People’s Artist of the Republic of Armenia”. He currently resides in Yerevan, Armenia and works as a professor of duduk at Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan. In addition to his long list of awards and accolades, Maestro Dabaghyan has graced the world with significant recordings such as “Music of Armenia: Duduk” and collaborated with the likes of Yo-Yo Ma on the Silk Road Project.

Duduk is perhaps the world’s most beautiful sounding ancient instrument. Its soft and vocal sound evokes unparalleled emotion that is at once calming, melancholic, and visceral. Heralding from Armenia and dating back 3,000 years, it features a hand crafted double reed and its stock is made from aged apricot wood. It symbolizes the enduring spirit of the Armenian people and is beloved across the world for its ability to transport listeners to worlds they never knew existed.. When Mad Zach first discovered this beautiful instrument it was through the recordings of Maestro Gevorg Dabaghyan. The recordings changed his life, and set him on a path to learn the duduk. After years of learning on his own, he connected with Maestro Dabaghyan to continue his studies. From here a friendship and desire to collaborate emerged. After carefully studying Maestro’s playing style, Mad Zach crafted a preliminary sketch for Maestro. Maestro then took the sketch to the recording studio and sent this back to Mad Zach, who built up the rest of the layers and arrangement around Maestro’s recording.
