The making of an offering has always been a key aspect of Japanese culture. Its religious connotation is easy to imagine, making offerings to gods at temples and shrines, but it goes far beyond this to the core of Japanese society’s inextricable unwritten rules of loyalty, gratitude, and moral debt - as present today as it was in ancient times. I’d add to that humility and grace, infused with the power that comes from offering with an open hand from a place of love.
